Subspeciality Training

There are currently 6 subspeciality training posts in the Severn Deanery. In addition there is an Academic Education Speciality Training Post in conjunction with the University of Bristol.
Each Subspeciality Training Post is supported by a Subspeciality Training Programme Supervisor (STPS)

Maternal and Fetal Medicine (MFM)

There are two sub speciality training posts in maternal and fetal medicine both based at St Michaels Hospital, Bristol. One post was established as a joint initiative with the University of Bristol and includes the opportunity to develop additional skills in the field of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education. This post was most recently appointed in March 2008. The second post was last appointed in October 2006. For further information please contact the Subspecialty Training Programme Supervisor (STPS).

Urogynaecology

There is one subspeciality training post in urogynaecology in the Severn Deanery (based at North Bristol (STPS Mr Phillip Smith) and Cheltenham (STPS Mr David Holmes) Hospitals) which rotates with another subspeciality urogynaecology trainee in the SW Peninsula (based at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth – STPS Mr Robert Freeman). Both current trainees took up their posts in April 2009.

Reproductive Medicine 

There is one subspeciality training post in reproductive medicine based between St Michaels Hospital and the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM) at North Bristol NHS Trust. The Subspeciality Training Programme Supervisor is Dr Uma Gordon. The last appointment was made in January 2008

Gynaecological Oncology (GO) 

There are two subspeciality training posts in Gynaecological Oncology in the Severn Institute. One post is based at St Michaels Hospital, Bristol – STPS Mr John Murdoch, the second post is based between Cheltenham Hospital and Birmingham –STPS Mr Rob Gornall. The last Cheltenham/Birmingham appointment was made in January 2008.
The post at St Michaels Hospital was appointed in April 2009 and will take up post in August 2009.

Academic Education Specialist Training

This post was set up in 2005 as a joint initiative between St Michaels Hospital and the University of Bristol. The post is open to national competition, attracts an NTN and is recognised for training in obstetrics and gynaecology towards CCT. The postholder undertakes general advanced training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology but is given the additional opportunity to develop skills in the field of teaching and learning specifically in Undergraduate Education. The postholder is expected to undertake the ATSM in Medical Education unless they already hold a teaching qualification. The supervising consultant is Mr David Cahill (Head of Academic Obstetrics and Gynaecology). This post was last appointed in June 2008. 

Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)

A subspeciality Training Programme is currently being set up in Sexual and Reproductive Health. The STPS will be Dr Tracey Masters at University Hospital Bristol NHS Trust. The post will be advertised in 2009. 

Applications are currently invited for a 3 year RCOG approved subspecialty training programme in Sexual and Reproductive Health. The programme has educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will be recognised for award of CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Sexual and Reproductive Health) at the successful completion of training (and will not be eligible for consultant positions involving obstetrics).
