SWOT & LOGBOOK DAYS
Regional Training Days are provided annually in the South West jointly for both the Severn & Peninsula Trainees. The aim is to provide a minimum of 10 Training Days. 5 are designated as Log Book Days to cover the mandatory courses & 5 are open to all trainees to cover a broader spectrum of topics & these are known as SWOT (

The calendar for the SWOT & Logbook days are planned annually by the SW Trainees. Currently the trainee organiser is Jon Ash - please contact Jon is you have any ideas or improvements.
To reserve your place at a SWOT/Logbook day you can now register on line. Please register your attendance as early as possible to ensure you can take study leave from your Trust to attend. Some training days have a maximum number of trainees who can attend & catering requires organising in advance. It is not necessary to apply to the School of O&G to attend the SWOT or Log Book days (unless funding is required) but study leave from your Trust must be approed in advance. It is also essential all O&G trainees are given an equal opportunity to attend these days within each Trust.
In the event you are unable to attend after you have registered please ensure you provide as much notice as possible to cancel your place to enable other trainees to be given the opportunity to attend & catering arrangements to be changed. If you have booked to attend on line you will need to cancel your attendance on line whilst also giving your reason for the cancellation.
SWOT Days
All trainees are expected to attend a minimum number of SWOT Days per year Currently the target is 50% & certificates of attendance are provided. Attendance at SWOT days will be assessed at the ARCP/RITA. Reasons for non attendance must be provided on the summary sheet & signed by your Educational Supervisor.
Pharmaceutical sponsorship is encouraged for these training days but sometimes a nominal charge is made to cover refreshments. Study leave funding can be used to cover these costs. Late cancellation or non attendance will result in non refunding of the charge.
For trainees organising a SWOT day for the first time visit 'How to organise a SWOT day'.
Log Book Days
Currently there are 5 Log Book Days in the SW each year & the calendar is published well in advance. Initially the courses were held in the same month, in the same Trust but more recently the courses are run according to the needs of the trainees. The schedule blow indicates the course run in 2009:
Paediatric Gynaecology/ Rape and Forensic Gynaecology - January Gloucester Trust
Basic Colposcopy - February Royal Devon and Exeter Trust
Basic Obstetric Ultrasound - April Plymouth
Assisted Reproduction - October St Michaels
Presentation skills (half day) - December Southmead
Breaking Bad Newshalf day) - December Southmead
The dates are set in advance & booking is essential & available on line. Attendance Certificates are provided.
If any trainee needs to attend a particular mandatory log book course which has not been provided please contact Jon Ash.
All ST Trainees must attend a training course on 'Breaking Bad News' to complete Module 1 of the Logbook. For the past 2 years a course has been run at Southmead Hospital by the Palliative Care Team which has been well received, however places are limited.
Many Trusts run their own 'In House' course for staff which would be suitable for Trainees to attend. At UHBristol Trust the Multidisciplinary 'Breaking Bad News' courses are run throughout the year by the Palliative Care Team & attendance is free to UHB employees.
