Description of Department and Training Opportunities:

Taunton & Somerset Hospital is set in central southern Somerset.  Ideally situated at the centre of the region yet within easy striking distance for Regional Meetings in Bristol. The Hospital serves a population in excess of 500,000 & houses most medical & surgical specialities.  It is renowned for it's friendly atmosphere but this should not distract from the clinical excellence which is practised.  Several of the departments have National & International reputations.  We believe the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Unit combines clinical excellent with enthusiastic teaching & friendly support.

Taunton has an excellent neonatal unit, it is one of 8 designated Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the South West Region.

Taunton has about 3200 deliveries per annum. Some of these deliveries may be in Midwife led units or at home. We have an excellent team of community midwives who look after all our low risk women identified on the ‘Low Risk Pathway’. We help to support community care with clinics based outside the main hospital to cover the varied demands of the region.

There are 2 main maternity wards covering both antenatal and postnatal care. We have a 9-bedded Labour Ward and a dedicated theatre.

Gynaecology Services

There is gynaecology ward for acute & long stay admissions. Taunton has a dedicated newly built Day Care Centre for day care surgery. There is an Early Pregnancy Unit run mainly by a nurse trained in ultrasound, with support from a Consultant & juniors where appropriate. There is a theatre suite where in patient surgery takes place & this is equipped for minimal access surgery. A cancer centre is currently under construction.
